Abstract: |
Static sediment traps have been successfully used to examine the modern processes of particle and organic fluxes and re suspension in coastal systems and foreign large lakes, but no relevant work has carried out in inland lakes in China. McLane Mark 8-13 sediment trap is a time series instrument that uses 13 cup sample bottles to collect settling particles in situ and to measure sample export flux and seasonal variability. In this paper, firstly, a brief introduction was given about the function, design, operation, and deployment and recovery of the sediment trap. Then, we stated the reasons why we chose Lake Qinghai for a pilot deployment of the sediment trap and its scientific significance. Finally, we presented some progresses from the time series samples of sediments and waters from Lake Qinghai collected during the July 2010 and September 2012 along with state of the art sensing data, which were demonstrated in details in the following five papers. On the basis of the pilot deployment of the sediment trap in Lake Qinghai that offers a novel perspective to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of particle processes within the lake, we suggest that the Mark 8-13 time series sediment trap is worthy to be used extensively in inland water bodies at various geographical settings and at a long term. |
